The Directorate of Medical Education has released the round 1 seat matrix for MBBS and BDS in Assam’s medical and dental colleges, covering the 85% state quota for the 2026 session.
The totals
Across 15 medical colleges there are 1,843 MBBS seats, of which 275 go to the 15% All India Quota and 1,545 remain as state quota. The three dental colleges hold 176 BDS seats, 26 to All India Quota and 132 to state quota.
Assam Medical College Dibrugarh and Gauhati Medical College are the largest at 250 seats each, followed by Silchar at 150. Most of the newer district colleges hold 100. ESIC Medical College at Beltola is the outlier with 18 seats and no All India Quota share.
The NRI quota is not running this year
The matrix carries a note that matters to anyone who was counting on it: the NRI and NRI-sponsored quota for admission to MBBS for session 2026-27 has been kept in abeyance, per a Government of Assam letter dated 23 July 2026.
If an NRI seat in Assam was part of your plan, it is not on the table this cycle. That changes the arithmetic for candidates who were treating it as a fallback.
TGL and Ex-TGL candidates have a step to complete
In a separate notice dated 17 August, the Directorate has told every candidate registered for round 1 under the TGL/Ex-TGL category to report to the Directorate of Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare, Assam, immediately. The visit is to verify TGL/Ex-TGL status and to have Annexure-VI signed and authenticated by that Director.
This is not optional paperwork. An unauthenticated Annexure-VI is the kind of thing that invalidates a category claim at verification, after allotment, when it is too late to do anything about it.
How Assam’s reservation actually splits
The state quota is divided further than most states. Alongside the usual unreserved, SC, ST(P), ST(H), OBC/MOBC-NCL and EWS columns (EWS is 6% for MBBS and 10% for BDS), the matrix carries separate allocations for TGL/Ex-TGL split by Brahmaputra and Barak valley, and for the Moran, Motak, Tai-Ahom, Chutia and Koch-Rajbongshi communities. There are also small reservations for extremist violence, freedom fighters, martyrs, children of ex-servicemen and serving defence personnel, sports, and orphans domiciled in Assam, plus a central pool and a Royal Bhutan quota.
Every one of those columns is a separate merit queue. Which one you sit in matters more in Assam than the raw seat total does.
